Legend has it that the village of Montblanc lived in fear of a fierce dragon that, driven by insatiable hunger, approached its walls in search of food.

At first, the inhabitants offered it sheep; when those were no longer enough, they gave it oxen; then, horses. But when even that could not satisfy the beast, they realized, filled with horror, that they would have to sacrifice human lives.

To decide who would be the next victim, they held a lottery that included the names of all the inhabitants, even that of the king and his family. The papers were placed in a pot, and an innocent hand drew the chosen name: the princess. Despite the pain and tears of her father, the king, the young woman bravely headed towards her fate.

Just when the dragon was about to devour her, a knight appeared on a white horse. It was Sant Jordi. With his lance, he mortally wounded the beast and defeated it. From the blood that flowed from the dragon's chest, a rose bush of red roses was born, and the knight cut one to offer it to the princess.

Since then, every April 23rd, Catalunya celebrates the Diada de Sant Jordi, a day when it is tradition to give a rose to a loved one.

This date also coincides with the Day of the Book, also celebrated on April 23rd, so the rose is joined by another symbol: the book. Thus, on this very special day, culture and love come together in a single celebration.

Catalunya is rich in beautiful traditions like this one. Living in this corner of the world guarantees you not only good weather, incredible landscapes, and spectacular cuisine, but also the opportunity to be part of celebrations filled with history, culture, and emotion like the Diada de Sant Jordi.
